Since we have moved to Switzerland, we have scoped out all the restaurants that were recommended for their red meat, mainly hamburgers. Yes, we are carnivores. For me the bloodier the better. My father-in-law likes it raw. Me, rare is perfect. The blood dripping down, pooling in the fries. The bright red center that still moos if I put a fork in it. Put bacon on it, all the better. Delish! Now that I have grossed out those of you who like it dead, burnt, and crispy, or possibly have turned you off red meat for a year like I have done to one of my "nieces," my work here is done. More meat for me! I mean more hamburger for me.
We have hit, I think, about 6 restaurants looking for the perfect burger. It is so easy in the States. Not here. And it is twice as difficult coming from Minneapolis, the home of the Juicy Lucy, or the 112 Eatery burger. For those of you unfamiliar the Juicy Lucy is a patty with a blob of cheese inside the patty. Yes, INSIDE! And the 112 is a burger on an English Muffin with Brie cheese. Now I am usually not a cheeseburger girl, but these are the top burgers ever. So we are constantly on a quest for the good burger.
Now the meat is Switzerland is tough. I mean the cow meat. Why? No clue. But very little marbling is seen. They are grass feed, I would believe. Maybe the natural grasses make it so? No clue, not a food scientist. What I do know is that we do not buy much red meat here. Besides the cost, just can't get it juicy enough. So what is a carnivore girl to do? Keep searching. And I have found three places that are tops so far. These are not in any order, by the way.
1: Carousel Burger, Ouchy, Switzerland. Though we like to be funny and pronounce with city with the English "ch" sound, it is actually an "sh" sound. Carousel is along the port in Ouchy. What is it right next to? Yes you guessed it, a carousel. It is a kiosk that my friend introduced me to one day. The burgers are cheap and delicious. They have a special sauce, lettuce, cheese, pickles, onions, no not a Big Mac, on a sesame seed bun. Another bonus? The guy speaks English. And cheese is optional by the way. It was yummo. Just like Simon Le Bon.
2. Etoile Blanche, Lausanne, Switzerland. Same friend as above took me here for lunch as well. I need to keep said friend around! This burger, like a burger from Pittsburgh, has cole slaw on it. Though the slaw is really just carrots in a funky sauce. This is a top burger my friends. And the fries are carnival fries with the skins still on! Yummo! I remembered to take a picture halfway through.
Why they gave me a salad, I have no idea why. There is a salad on the burger! I especially loved the basket the fries came in. The burger is moist, messy, and magnificent. The best combo possible and a major requirement for any good burger.
3: Non Stop Burger, Lutry, Switzerland. This place is in an alley in this little old section of town. It looks like a dive bar, but a great little place. Bring cash as they do not take any other form of payment. Different friend who is on the same quest as us found this place. They have like 20 different choices to pick from. Love having options! Though the burger was cooked more than I like, it was extremely juicy and tasty. Bacon topped it, and though the cheddar cheese was too mild, a nice blend to finish it off. Again, I was halfway though when I remembered to take a picture. But then I did not bring my phone and my hubby had to take the picture. And then I had to wait a week plus with daily reminders for him to email me to get the pictures. Note to self, bring you phone next time!
Though you can't tell, there was no pink in the meat so no need to be grossed out. Though the bacon was not cooked all the way. Have I turned you off bacon now? More for me! And the fries were salted perfectly! We were fighting over the last ones, not an overly crunchy one in the bunch! And yes, everyone else gave me their tomatoes.
Our quest continues, however. Easter dinner tomorrow will be a roast I bought in France. Since the guy didn't speak English, I think I got a rump roast, but I don't know. It looks good and was half the price as a Swiss roast. We will see. If it doesn't turn out, there is always crackers and cheese.

I love raw hamburgers... better known as "Cannibal Sandwiches" or "Tiger Meat".
ReplyDeleteNo worries! We found a great place for that!
